The Bond Trust
About Bond Trust

Our Aims

Protection, partnership, and participation. Three aims that shape how we work, who we work with, and what we ask of ourselves.

Aim One

Protection

Bond Trust works to strengthen the safety and wellbeing of our communities by supporting reintegration approaches that are evidence-based, relational, and grounded in dignity. Protection, for us, is not simply the absence of harm. It is the presence of stability, connection, and pro-social opportunity.

We promote practices that:

  • reduce risk through strong, supportive relationships
  • uphold accountability in ways that encourage growth
  • ensure special conditions and reintegration pathways are used fairly, consistently, and effectively
  • use a strengths-based approach to support people to build lives that contribute positively to whānau and community.

The koru symbolises this aim: safety grows when people are supported to unfurl into healthier patterns of living, surrounded by structures that guide and protect.

Aim Two

Partnership

Partnership is at the heart of Bond’s mahi. We work alongside statutory agencies, NGOs, researchers, people with lived experience, and community groups to strengthen reintegration outcomes across Aotearoa.

Our partnerships include:

  • Rehabilitation and reintegration providers
  • Peer support networks
  • Faith-based community groups
  • Academic and research partners

Through initiatives such as Te Ara Oranga (2025) and Te Ara Oranga 2.0 (2026), we help create spaces where the sector can share knowledge, identify gaps, and work collectively. Like the interwoven fronds of the koru, each partner brings unique strengths, and together, we form a stronger, more resilient whole.

Aim Three

Participation

We believe communities thrive when people are supported to participate fully, whether they are returning from prison, supporting reintegration, or shaping the systems that govern it.

Bond promotes participation by:

  • amplifying the voices of lived experience
  • supporting informed, constructive public conversations about reintegration
  • encouraging community involvement in safe, structured support
  • fostering opportunities for people to reconnect, contribute, and belong

Our emerging workstream, the National Advisory Group on Special Conditions (NAGSC) reflects this commitment. Participation is the energy that keeps the koru unfolding: people, communities, and systems growing together toward greater wellbeing.

Where To Next

From aims to everyday mahi

These three aims are not abstractions. They show up in pre-release support, post-release mentoring, sector training, and the evidence we hold ourselves to.
